Q: Bootcamp Partitioning Error?

Hello

I am trying to use bootcamp to partition a disk of windows 8.1 onto my Mac.  I can go through up until the point where it tells me to install.  Then it starts installing and gives me this error message after a few seconds:

Your disk could not be partitioned

An error occurred while partitioning the disk

So I really really need to figure out a way around this.

I am using a mac from mid 2011 and I am trying to install windows 8.1 64 bit.

If you can help me out that would be great.

(P.S. I did set up this windoes 8.1 disk with parallels on my computer originally but then I uninstalled it so I could use bootcamp and then use parallels with it later.  Could having already used the disk be the problem?)

Thanks for reading my problem

    Hi there ShadowChester,

You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.

You are contradicting yourself in the post. Does it fail during the partitioning step while still in Mac OS X or is the installation of Windows 8.1 failing during the install process? If it is during the partition step you need to boot to recovery by holding cmd+R at startup. Repair the disk and repair permissions.

then reboot and try partitioning again using the Bootcamp Utility.

I tried that and I still got the same error.  and yes I am having issues with partitioning not installing windows.  Sorry for not clarifying that.

Sadly those did not help me.  I will post another reply with a bit more information.

    Maybe this can help

I have been trying to make a partition lately for windoes 8.1

I have OSK Mavericks and I tried both using bootcamp to make a partition and then I tried using disk utility to make a partition.  I have looked up how to fix it such as verifying the disk or verifying the disk on the repair drive. I have also tried typing in that command in the Command+S startup.

(Btw the first time I tried partitioning through Bootcamp it was working but then I ejected my usb as it was making the partition and it gave me an error.  Partitioning has been giving me errors ever sense that.)

(sorry about the weird white highlighting)

Is your drive SSD, HDD, or Fusion?  How many partitions does it currently have?  Can you post the output of this terminal command

    diskutil list

Im not sure how to tell if it is SSD, HDD, or Fusion could you please tell me where I can find thet information?  Then I will post it here

I have never made a partition so I jusy have my main drive and this is what the terminal said:

       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0

       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1

       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            499.2 GB   disk0s2

       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3

    /dev/disk1

       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

       0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *2.0 GB     disk1

       1:                 DOS_FAT_32 DISK1S1                 2.0 GB     disk1s1

Bootcamp should be able to go on the 500GB boot drive.  I just wanted to make sure you didn't have additional partitions.  Bootcamp is the only "apple" way to make a bootcamp partition.  You should boot into recovery (command-r at the chime) and check your drive for errors, after that try bootcamp again.

Ok I just tried it and I did not get any errors.  Then I went to use bootcamp and it failed again...

I was wondering I changed the like data type of the flashdrive I am using to bring over the drivers to DOS Fat could that affect it?

Also the first time I ever tried partitioning it was working but then I was stupid and pulled out the flash drive while it was making the partition causing me to get an error.  It has been giving me errors ever sense.  I did erase that flash drive and then I changed its file type to DOS Fat again and then tried bootcamp again.  I still keep getting errors.

I dont know if this information will help but I thought I might as well post it just in case.

Are you failing on the partitioning or copying the windows drivers?  2GB is not enough for the drivers.  If you read apple's article on bootcamp (and you should) I think you need at least 4 or maybe 8GB.

    Let me look......

Copying the drivers to the USB drive seems to work.  It's when it gets to partitioning that it fails.

Any other ideas on what my problem might be?
