For those that have sent their MacBooks for Repair (Randon Shutdown)

It seems unfortunantly that many of us are sending are MacBooks in to deal with this random shutdown problem, so I thought it might be usefull if those that have sent their's in could post what parts were replaced and if it was succesfull or not. Thanks

Mac Book, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

White 2ghz, problem started 6 weeks after purchase, did the online tech solution route with no resolution, sent it in for repair, that was 10 days ago and no word on when I will get it back. Not a happy camper at this point. I think they have a clear lemon problem here so do not expect whenever I get mine back that the problems will be over with.

mine's in the shop.. it's been there since the 2nd... so 12 days. I've called twice - the first time I got a real jerk who didn't listen to what I said at all. This last time, I got a very nice woman who helped me out and put in a search for the part. I have no idea whether that will speed things up, but hopefully it will.

It had the random shut down problem, and then it just died completely (showed random colors on the screen and nothing else)
they're replacing the logic board and the plastic top of the keyboard.

i have no idea whether the logic board will fix all the problems, but i'll let you know.

Here is a thread that includes a couple parts lists for people who go theirs back and so far they seem to be working properly:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=598209

I sent mine in for repair today. The guy at my Apple retailer said that they replaced hard drives to fix the problems on a couple of the MacBooks there. He said that replacing the logic board didn't solve the problem, nor did replacing the thermal assembly. I can't see how it is a hard drive problem, but I am no tech, so who knows. I'll let you know when they tell me.

BTW, mine was a week 21 machine and mine never got that hot - the shut downs occured when it was cold.

Replaced parts were (repair took 15 days):
APP-603-9857 ASSY, BEZEL, M42 APP-605-0994 SVC, TOP CASE W APP-875-2566 SPONGE HEATPIPE BACK APP-603-8071 ASSY, HEATSINK, M42

I can't tell if the repair resolved the issue because my MB had to be sent for another repair to get all of external casing replaced due to pretty bad scratches made during the shutdown repair (@ Flextronics Int'l).

Thats why I thought this topic might be usefull, because if we all get our logic boards or HD's replaced and the probs continue we might be able to figure out what isnt causing the problems...since apple doesnt seem to be giving us any help. I also find it interesting how the "Apple Geniuses" each are doing something different when brought this problem.

Yeah I know - hard drives don't sound right to me either, unless a malfunctioning hard drive is causing a problem external to it, so that it does not even need to be spinning to cause a problem (ie the hard drive is shorting something else out).

I sent them the lists of parts replaced from a couple posts in that thread I included above. These people so far are having success with the replaced top case, bezel, heat assembly, heat sinks etc.

I will wait and see what happens. I'll let everyone know.

Just wanted to say my MacBook has been running flawlessly and a lot cooler since I had it repaired for the random shutdown issue. I have had it back for 15 days now, and not a problem! These are the parts that it says were reaplaced:

App-605-0994 SVC, TOP CASE W APP-603-9857 ASSY, BEZEL, M42 APP-630-7691 PCB, MLB, 2.0GHZ DC, SMS/KONI APP-603-8071 ASSY, HEATSINK, M42.

Good luck to everyone- I hope you have success with repairs as well.

Excellent idea!

I have a week 20 black MacBook that was experiencing random shutdowns. First time at the Genius Bar it wouldn't shut down. Second trip back, it shut down as soon as he tried to look at the console logs. It was sent in for a logic board replacement, but I'm pretty sure that's not what I got. Was overnighted to Memphis and was back in my hands in less than 48 hours.

I can't decipher what they repaired. Under "Product serviced by replacing the following:" it says:

APP-590-5254 PWR CRD, GND AC ADPTR, NMP, US

Looks like a power cord and AC adapter, but I didn't send them one and they didn't send me one. Haven't been able to find out yet what "NMP, US" are.

On the other hand (I almost hesitate to say this for fear of jinxing it), I haven't had a random shutdown since I got it back (5 days ago), and I've turned it on and off a lot since then. Did get the colored vertical line screen the second time a turned it on, but a PRAM reset fixed that.

I've had my macbook for about a week now and I definately noticed that it runs pretty hot. Reading these posts has me a little worried as I don't really want to deal with sending my computer back in since it's nearly knew. I think the first time I used it for an extended period of time while I was adding my photos to the hard drive it shut down at one point. I have had the message pop up a few times that says something along the lines of "The OS shut down unexpectantly..."

Would you all suggest that I am going to have the same problems as you and I should take care of this now?
