Home Sharing (photos) not working

We listen to iTunes and watch photo slideshows through our Apple TV3 every day. The iTunes on my iMac streams to the Apple TV through Airplay, and I have Home Sharing setup on the iMac so I can view our photos as a slideshow as the music plays.

In the past few weeks, the Photos selection within Computers > *mycomputername* > Photos has not consistently been appearing. A restart of iTunes and the Apple TV usually resolves the issue.

Now (as of yesterday), if I see the Photos shared from the iMac and I select them and choose an album to watch, the Apple TV basically hangs (it progresses VERY slowly to load the preview/slideshow/screensaver screen that normally loads relatively quickly, with a spinning wheel). If I am very patient (not mashing the menu button out of frustration) I can get into a slideshow about once out of every ten tries before the Apple TV gives up and backs out to the main menu screen.

Is anyone else sufferign from this lag/delay? I noticed there was some update that ran a few days ago when I tried to use the Apple TV; is this an iOS issue due to a software/firmware update?

Additional info:

* I tried Home Sharing photos through a laptop instead of the iMac. This exhibited the same issue. Both the laptop and the iMac are running Mavericks.

** I tried streaming a movie through Home Sharing off the iMac and it works almost instantly, without any issues.

Same problem. I have 3 Apple TVs connected to 3 TV sets.

2 of my Apple TVs are still on 6.0.2 and work fine. Photos appear just as usual. I link to 5 photo folders - the smallest is 57 photos and the largest is 5700 photos.

The 3rd Apple TV is running the new software update 6.1. Music works fine(!) but photos hang up - blank screen, eventually blank 'squares' become visible, remote will not function and eventually something appears. Takes forever to get off the photo menu. All of this behavior is new and because of 6.1.

I have done the the usual - unplugged Apple TV, restarted 4 times already, deleted and reinstalled Home Sharing folders in iTunes. Guess what - it is the 6.1 update.

So Ken Peck, respectfully, the only thing I can advise is just to wait for another update. You are not alone and my having 3 Apple TVs proved it is the new update. Very annoying and I am upset but there is nothing I can do. Reading some of these fixes shows it is a waste of time to try to correct the problem. Anyone here working with a Senior Advisor, please direct them to my post.

Hope this helps...

Ken Peck - thanks for the 'solution' checkmark! I only wish that I could actually solve the problem. I hope my post made this situation less painful and will save you time in trying to 'fix' it. Later tonight I will post in the Apple Feedback area about my findings.

The 3rd Apple TV with the 6.1 software is my only Apple TV with auto-update. I will have to leave it that way as one day Apple will correct this. When they do, I will go back to manual update like my other Apple TVs.

BTW, I am on 10.9.2 and all software on my 2 year old iMac is up to date.

Regards

I have the same problem - 24000 files. I can see photos panning by in the photos menu of my photos and I can look at photos in individual folders in the photos menu of Apple TV without a problem but when I want to do a sldie show of all 24000 the screen goes completely blank and unresponsive and it restarts after about 2-3 minutes and I am back to the main apple tv menu. I've deleted the Apple TV Cache file in the folder on my PC (Windows 8.1) and it rebuilt (14.5MB) but still the same problem.

My apple TV is on 6.1. Have never had this issue before and I've had this many photos for over 6 months.

I have another Apple TV (v3) that is still on 6.0.2. I unplugged the Apple TV 2 that is on 6.1 and plugged the Apple TV 3 into the same cables using the same iTunes on my PC and all 24000 photos came up in seconds and work normally in a slide show.

Looks very much like a bug in 6.1! Now how long do we have to wait for a fix?

Since I have a captive, relevant audience...

Is anyone else having issues connecting to their photo library through the Apple TV? I turn off my iMac (running iPhoto/Home Sharing in iTunes) every night. The Apple TV stays on and does whatever it does all night. In the morning I start the computer and open iTunes, then go downstairs.

Pretty much every day now (since the 6.1 update?), when I go into Computers on the Apple TV to try to get the photo slideshow going, I will see four entries (I think its music, podcasts, something something) but no photos. If I come back to the computer and quit/restart iTunes, the Photos selection will appear on the Apple TV.

I've been talking with apple about the same issue - exactly the same behaviour as described above on 6.1 on an ATV 2. My ATV3 on 6.0.2 works fine. The tipping point for me is 15200 photos. It works at 15200 photos but not at 15201. When it does work, same behaviour - very slow - slow to bring up thumbnails. But works great with 28 photos!

I suspect it's not the actual number of photos but the total size of something - the images being loaded in or an index table perhaps - looks to be a memory space issue - too many photos uses up memory and the ATV cant allocate space then crashes? - I dont know the code, just a guess...

The apple agent I spoke to said she'd escalate it so I should hear back at the start of next week (today is Saturday) on what they want me to do next.

She got me to restore my ATV to be sure it wasnt something obvious..

FWIW, photo display via photostream still works. I have the same problem as everyone on this thread but if I recall correctly, it started before my update to 6.1. Maybe this is actually tied to an iphoto issue? Reason I say this is that I turned Home sharing off in itunes, then on again to see if there was a wonky setting somewhere. However after clicking "Select photos to share with Apple TV", it took maybe 10 minutes to get the check boxes up. This used to happen in seconds.

Anyway, here's what I do. I have a few albums set up that I use as screensavers when music is playing - so the only workaround I have yet found is to "privately" share those albums on photostream (ie, share to myself only), wait for them to upload to icloud and then download to ATV 2, and then set the screensaver to that photostream.

Not a solution for everyone, but it got me out of trouble. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before we see an update (to either ATV or iphoto).

This update to the ATV 3 bit me as well. I have been sharing 20000+ files for a long time now. I can get to about 15000 before I get the dreaded bounce back to the Home screen without seeing and error message. You would think that I would learn to turn off that autoupdate.

Absolutely, ridiculous that they don't test these updates with one large iPhoto library before releasing them.
