Mavericks very slow on iMac 20-inch early 2008

Hi, I have a iMac 20-inch early 2008, 4GB RAM, running Mavericks 10.9.2, very slow... any suggestions?

Slow could be the OS, but it could also be something else:

1) A too-full hard drive

2) Unapproived system hacks/modifiers

3) anti-virus software

4) non-Apple software for backing up to external hard drives

Hmmm. Not seeing any of the "usual" suspects. ClamXav isn't usually a probelm but you could try temporarily disabling it to see if that helps.

Cycling74 has shown up in a number of similar reports of issues but they are usually restricted to issues with Safari. Same with some of the many media players you have.

I am not familiar with Kies or Kiesagent that show up in the report.

If you are not using all the media players, disable them or at least look to see if they require updating. Outdated version of DivX have caused issues before.

These are also questionable. If you know why thery are needed, may sure they are updated. If not using them, delete them.

Kernel extentions are patches to the heart of the operating system itself. Third party kernel extentions are a pirme source of trouble and slowdowns. You seem to have a number of Samsung developer kernel extentions. Do you know why they are there?

Thank you, lkrupp, I think Kies software install these extensions for me. Kies, really, does not work fine on Mac, I was using it to sync my Galaxy Next phone, but often crashes...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Note that he has ClamXavSentry in his login items twice, so there's a chance he has two processes watching his hard drive.
