OK, that is the iPad 2, which can be upgraded to the most recent version of iOS (7.1)
What if I don't have access to a computer? Can this still be fixed?
You will not be able to upgrade without using a computer.
If the message is telling you that you need iOS 5 or higher than I'm going assume your iPad is running a version of the iOS 4. To update that version, or an earlier version, of the iOS you need to connect your iPad to a computer running iTunes.
Start iTunes on the computer and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in iTunes. Then select the Summary or General tab in the main window. Look for the choice to Check for Updates. You might also be asked to update immediately on connecting or selecting your iPad in iTunes.
Before updating be sure you copy all important data to the computer just in case something goes awry.
Then click on the update. If you have an original iPad you will be updated to iOS 5.1.1. All other iPads will update to oops 7.1
If you receive any error messages when trying to update make a note of exactly what the messages says then tell us what it is here.
