Q: Why do my recently added contacts not sync with iCloud?

As of about 2 weeks ago, my contacts that I create on my iPhone 5 do not move to iCloud. That means they also do not sync to Messages.

Troubleshooting steps so far:

- Un-check and check the Contacts button in Settings - iCloud - Contacts (on phone).

- Un-check Contacts button. Hold home button and restart phone. Check button.

- Sync phone with iTunes.

What should I try next?

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1

Have you tried resetting your Documents and Data on iCloud?

Make sure you are adding the to the iCloud account.  Check Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section) to be sure it's set to iCloud.  If it isn't make this change, then add a test contact and see if it syncs now.

This worked. I then did a manual delete/re-add for my contacts (I only have 5 or so). For future reference, would there be a way to retroactively have those contacts added?

You can, but it's a bit involved and requires using an app.  Probably not worth it for only 5 contacts.  If you're interested in how you would do this, you would do the following:

    1. Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (any iCloud contacts will still be in iCloud).
    2. Download the app My Contacts Backup.  (If you have more than 500 contacts to transfer you will need the “Pro” version.)  Use the app to back up the remaining contacts on your phone (from the other accounts) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself.  Confirm that you have received the email.
    3. Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.
    4. Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section) and set this to iCloud.
    5. Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars…tap each of the other accounts you are syncing contacts with and turn off contacts syncing with these accounts (otherwise you will see duplicate contacts on your device).
    6. Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from the other accounts back to your device, and to iCloud.
