Time Machine backups

I upgraded to Maverick and had previously successfully backed up with TimeMachine and continued to do so. I unfortunately suffered a hard disk crash and though quickly fixed when i wanted to recover from my TimeMachine backups, I was only provided "full" bootable restores taht were prior to the Maverick upgrade. I did restore, upgraded to Maverick and then did some interium restores from the incremental backups that had been done post the restore. This took considerable time and patience.

What can I do to ensure, or trigger to have a "full" bootable restore available of Maverick if my hard disk crashes again?

Thanks in advance for any assistance on this.
