Q: Mail icon on task bar no longer functions

Need to get it to function again.  ALSO, mail is not shut down and it it preventing my laptop from shutting down as well.  Help appreciatated.

    Press command + option + esc keys together at the same time.   Wait.

     

    When Force Quit window appears, select the Mail, if not already.

    Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.

    Wait.    Mail will quit.

     

    If this does not help, press the power button for 7 or more seconds.

     

    Computer will shut down.

     

    Restart.

    Can you start Mail from the Application folder?
