First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks.

When I bought it I was told it had 4 gigs of ram and it was a 2010 'book. Unfortunately the store lied, and I was too dumb to check. It's a Macbook 4,1 early 2008. I just purchased and updated to snow leopard and am about to update to Lion, which is the latest OS I can upgrade to.

Here's a question though: If I replace the ram with 2x2 gigs of ram can I update to mavericks? or does that not have much to do with anything? I'm also wary of doing this because, apparently, you can't necessarily trust the distributors to send you compatible ram.

No, the model 4,1 Early 2008 MacBook will not be able to run Mountain Lion and Mavericks, but it can run 10.7 Lion. Lion is still available from Apple. For 10.7 Lion you can get a redemption code to use in the App Store here. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks require 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks no longer support Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.

While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion and Mavericks are pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

sweet. Thank you so much for your help. I've already bought Lion, but the download is stalling. Oh well, I'll figure it out. I'll keep this for school and buy a new pro. Once again, thank you so much for your help with this stuff.
