Hello: Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

Not sure what the actual cause for the discrepency of your file name error, but

if there are incorrect symbols, characters, etc in the name, it may not work.

"I cannot save a file name with more than 31 characters"

{File names of greater than 31 characters have been supported in OS X since (almost)

the beginning; while OS 9.2 & before had limits, the longest was 31 characters in OS 9,

but 256 characters in OS X.}

file names OS X:

Long file names:

Mac OS 9 has a 31-character limit for filenames. In Mac OS X, a

filename can be as long as 256 characters and span several lines.

There can be glitches which may hinder file name size, such as unsupported

characters or punctuation marks. So, there may be a structural or context

reason for some to be supported and work, while others not.

If your computer is running an older OS 9.2.2 or earlier, or you are running

Classic OS 9 under OS X, the file name length may be affected.

Hopefully the link above will help in explain the occurrance & cause.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
