How do I add an alarm to a calendar appointment?

I'm tearing my hair out trying to understand the Calendar app in OS X Mavericks.

When I create an appointment in iOS, I can easily add an alarm, or set it to repeat (weekly, monthly etc.).

In the OS X version, I cannot do this. I double-click on the appointment and I get a kind of preview version, that only lets me add Invitees, or "Notes Attachments, URLs".

How do I add an alarm to this event? It's in an iCloud calendar.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 3.4HHz Intel i7, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM

Ok, as a workaround, I can edit the event in iOS and add an alert, which then (eventually) syncs to the OS X calendar.

All of the fields (in the "kind of preview version") can be edited, is there some other kind of editing needed?

You see what Csound means when you CTL click an event: if some thing do not show click the field you want expanded: eg the date: it folds out the fields that are in Csound's image.

Same for Add invitees

and Add Notes...

I do not have to ctl-click the field in order to edit, I just click the field, enter the data, done.

I don't get that view... I get this

nowhere in that view does it mention repeats or alerts.

Ah... that's the bit I was missing... I didn't realise I had to click on the appointment start time to see those options.

On iOS Calendar, the repeat and alert settings are in a completely different section to the appointment time (as is invitees), and are immediately visible as soon as you choose to edit the appointment. I was expecting OS X Calendar to behave the same way.
