Can I connect a MacBook Air mid 2013 to an early 2009 iMac mini display port for dual screen setup?

I have purchased a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort to connect from thunderbolt port on MacBook Air to mini display port on iMac. If this is not an option can I connect Apple TV to my iMac with the hd I converter so I can use airplay?

Any help will be much appreciated?

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

You can't use the iMac as a display using Target Display Mode for the MBA. The late 2009 27" models would work but not yours. As far as the Apple TV I don't know but I've never heard of anyone doing it.
