Choose Quit GarageBand from the GarageBand menu. If you can't do it that way, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu and close it from there.

If Force Quit does not work, launch the Terminal.app from the folder Applications > Utilities.

Then copy and paste the following command into the Terminal window:

killall GarageBand


This will send the "TERM" signal to GarageBand. If that does not quit GarageBand, try a stronger signal:

killall GarageBand -6


And if it still does not terminate GarageBand, use the ultimate killer

killall GarageBand -9
