can I hook up an iMac to a laptop to use it as a monitor

Question

I want to buy a new laptop, but also want to be able to use it in my office, using my big iMac monitor. Is that possible?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Depends on what iMac model you have. 2011 and later then you can using target display mode. 2009 and 2010 only with the 27" models.
