Okay, try to restart the iPod Service. Here is how to do this in Windows 8.

  1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod.
  2. Move the cursor to the upper right corner to open the Charm Bar.
  3. In the search field, type Services.
  4. Select "View local services" on the right side of the screen.
  5. Scroll down, select iPod Service, and click "Stop the service."
  6. After the service has stopped, click "Start the service."
  7. After the iPod Service has started again, open iTunes and connect the device.

Thanks for the suggestions but these aren't working.

I've tried (almost) all of the items in the http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363 guide. Somewhat reluctant to disable my security software though. Using Windows 8. The iPod connected OK after first install of current iTunes. Stopped the second time I tried to sync. Reinstalled iTunes completly. This worked ok once and then failed second time. I tried restarting the iPod service as well. All very frustrating. Hopefully there is an answer on teh horizon.

Did not have the same probelm as Mac_Lio as all data is still on iPod and iPod is working fine.
