Q: Why does backup now require a password?

I noticed when connecting my iPhone 5 to iTunes over the weekend to do the update to 7.1, it required a password for encryption before doing the backup. Did this come in with IOS 7? I don't recall it asking for this before, but I may not have backed the iPhone up for a while.

You are not required to make an encrypted backup. I don't think you were paying close attention.

Oh, I paid attention; at first I cancelled the password creation for encryption, and IT cancelled the backup. After reconnecting the iPhone, I read the message very carefully; it said an encrypted backup was required!

Do you have an Exchange account?

Note you can always do a backup (encrypted or not) but to restore an encrypted backup you need the password.
The password cannot be retrieved (if you can, what's the point of having password?).
