Question On Replacing iWeb for Podcasting

Hi,

Ok, I've submitted this question to the iTunes Store help but they can't seem to understand what I'm asking. They keep sending me information on how to submit a podcast for iTunes listing. Anyway, here's the rundown: for our podcast, we've been using iWeb to post new episodes and update the podcast website. There are many obvious reasons for wanting to change this, but it comes down to two main reasons: Apple no longer supports iWeb and iWeb limits the number of posts to 50 active. Which means that out of the 123 episodes and growing of my podcast, only the most current 50 will list in iTunes AND on my website (www.talescast.com). So, I've been slowly building a new site. I host through DreamHost, and have created a subdomain called podcast.talescast.com, and did the WordPress plug in, recreated all the episode posts and have all 123 episode media files in the library waiting for me to plop them in to the Blubrry podcast plug-in. Here are my concerns: When I replace the iWeb site with the WordPress sit, and IF I upload all 123 past episodes, then publish, how will that affect iTunes? Will there be no issue at all, and eventually all of my podcast episodes (from #1 to current) be listed in iTunes? Or, will there be a be Charlie Foxtrox of a mess and all but the most current 50 be double listed? It's important to move away from iWeb ASAP. Any and all help is much appreciated!! Al

It's only the feed which matters. You can do one of two things.

1: Make a new feed in WordPress and make sure that it has exactly the same URL as the iWeb feed - in other words it has to have the same filename and be in the same directory as the iWeb feed. Subscribers will see the changes immediately, the Store will take a couple of days or so to catch up.

2: I don't know whether WordPress will allow you to do that, so if you are going to have the feed at a new URL you are going to have to add a special tag to the iWeb feed as detailed here:

Since iWeb doesn't allow you to edit the feed directly you will have to download it from the server, open it in TextEdit in plain text mode, edit it to put the tag in, and re-upload it. Make sure that TextEdit doesn't add .txt to the filename.

Subscribers will be redirected seamlessly to the new feed; the Store will switch over the next time it checks the feed, usually in a couple of days. Leave the iWeb feed in place for a couple of weeks to make sure all subscribers have had time to be redirected; after that you can remove it as the redirect is permanent.

iWeb has its own particular structure: whether you can replicate that in WordPress I don't know. Both programs create the feed automatically, and you will probably find that WordPress does not place in at the same URL that iWeb does, so if that is the case you will have to follow the second procedure I outlined above. If you change the URL and don't do this then your podcast will stop updating in the Store as it will lose contact with the feed, and the same for subscribers.
