Mar 27, 2014 12:20 AM in response to Jim Grimwadeby Jim Grimwade,Video card has been replaced with a (tested) working version of the same I took out without any success I'm afraid. Same symptoms as before VC replacement:
- Black monitor screen
- LED on/off light working as per usual
- Wont boot and fans start revving really loudly after a couple of minutes
Any ideas what this could be if not the video card?

Mar 27, 2014 10:01 PM in response to Jim Grimwadeby alfonsojon,You're not going to like the sound of this, but I help out in a school full of dying PowerPC-based Macs, and this sounds like the most obvious sign that indicates a failing logic board. If possible, try putting your old hardware on a working logic board to see if that helps. Worst case scenario is you'll have to replace the logic board, which shouldn't be too hard or expensive, given the age of the Mac.
Good luck!

Apr 1, 2014 9:06 AM in response to Jim Grimwadeby MajorMacintosh,Hello Jim,
I agree with (alfonsojon) I have had the exact same issues as you described on three 2GHz Dual 2003 models I'm in the process of rebuilding.
I plan on attempting a reflow of the motherboard's in my home oven, I've got nothing to loose on my end.

Apr 1, 2014 3:06 PM in response to Jim Grimwadeby Adam Simpson5,Hi Jim, if you look over my last topic of '1.6GHz G5 not starting up', I had similar issues to you.
That G5 in question is now gone, beyond economical repair apparently, and I've been given a replacement 2.3GHz. Yes, the engineer also said I had logic board failure, so maybe this is not just a video issue.
However, I never got around to changing the video card myself back then, but I did wonder about this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1935
Maybe you've got the video card model which they mention, and need to put a different model in?

Apr 1, 2014 10:04 PM in response to Adam Simpson5by Jim Grimwade,Thanks Adam, Alfonso and Major for your responses.
I've taken the G5 into get looked at by a professional and the verdict is that the logic board is the likely offender.
Now I juast have to toss up buying/ installing a new (2nd hand or third party) one or putting this $ towards a new Mac.
Cheers
Jim
