Does iPad read ePub file format?

Someone told me that the Kindle reads ePub. If I cannot use iBooks, can I use Kindle app on iPad?

iBook application design to read iBooks and Epubs both. ibook and epub both are the extension format like .jpg .png. Option within the format is vary. Most Books in store created as epub format. No need use Kindle app or something to read the Epub. You can directly sync through iTune using iMac or PC.

You can read epubs on an iPad. If they are digital-rights-management free then you can read them in the iBooks app - you can add them to your computer's iTunes library via File > Add To Library (or if using a Mac with OS X Mavericks on them then add them to its iBooks app) and then sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad, or you can email them to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app to copy them to iBooks, or you might be able to download them via Safari and copy them to iBooks.

If they have DRM on them then does the site/store that you got them from have their own app in your country's store, or does the site have a FAQ/help section on it for how to read them on an iOS device ?
