Downloaded music not transferring to iPhone

I have downloaded some songs into my iTunes where they play properly, but when I try to transfer them to my phone(either by syncing my music or by manually dragging them over) the songs won't go to my phone. How can I get these songs on my iPhone 5? I have the most recently updated version of iTunes.
