Can not upgrade to Mavericks from v.10.6.8 Snow Leopard

Please help me understand why can I not upgrade to Mavericks from my v.10.6.8 Snow Leopard. My MacPro2,1 machine is of late 2008 (I think, but I can not verify the year), she has a 3 GHz Quad-Core Xeon chip, 8 GB of 667 MHz memory and 600+ GB free space on the disk. The Apple upgrade page says that "OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer", accompanied by a "Learn More" and an "OK" button.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), upgrading the OS

Your computer isn't fully 64-bit and cannot run Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

Thank you, Niel. Could you tell me in layman's terms, what steps should I make to get closer to my goal in that respect? My main reason for wanting to switch to Mavericks is that having it I could use the Autodesk Maya Student access for a while.

Buy a new, refurbished, or secondhand Mac which meets the system requirements for Mavericks.

Thank you again, Niel. My only problem is that I think I have had all these requirements satisfied (including having bought a second hand Mac, two years ago 😊).

Thank you, sberman. Now I was told really in layman's terms. I have read your link and it clearly states that my baby is from 2007... Now I know more than what I was bargaining for 🙂.

Thanks again, sberman. I would never go back to PC-s. (I think I mistakenly credited myself instead of the two of you with resolving my problem. This is the first time I registered here and if there is a way to get the ten points to both of you, I would attempt correcting it).
