MacBookPro 2.4GHz i5, 4 GB RAM Video shuts off after OS upgrade

A friend of mine has a MacBookPro 2.4GHz i5 with 4GB of RAM and running 10.68 and was doing fine.

Two weeks ago Disk Warrior was used on the internal drive via target mode and small errors were corrected. Then an OS upgrade to 10.75, and ever since then, he reported three times the video suddenly dies but the fan (and probably internal HD) stay on. The video cannot be revived by any key or the trackpad, and removing all USB devices don't help. He had to hold down the power button for the usual five seconds, then it started up fine, producing a crash report.

Went to visit his again today. Reset the SMC using the usual three keys and power button. Zapped the PRAM. However, for the first time in my presence while he had six programs running and the internal fans were audibly running fast, the fourth episode occurred. Yes, the fans stayed on high and the video could not be revived. Told my friend that this is most likely an hardware issue and heat-related, and he should limit the number of apps running and add more RAM.

I've used many Mac laptops using 10.75 and haven't had this issue. This friend thinks it was the OS upgrade 10.68 ----> 10.75 and/or running Disk Warrior which caused these episodic malfunctions.

What do you think is the cause ? Does the report below help ?

Any of you had this problem when running 10.75 and 10.75 was a contributing cause ?

Thank you.

It looks like the mid-2010 problem. There's an issue with the graphics module on that machine. There was a program in place to replace the motherboard within 3 years of purchase, but you're probably outside of that. Some folks have supposedly gotten theirs changed outside of that period, so you can try.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

What you can do to use it is download gfxcardstatus from http:gfx.io and force the graphics to Intel. That will lessen the panics at the expense of graphics speed.

You may be eligible for a depot repair, which is a flat rate of about $310. Ask at the Genius Bar. Take along a printout of your panic.

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

Good luck,

Clinton
