Ethernet internet connection constantly dropping

Since I got fibre optic internet installed 2 months ago the internet keeps disconnecting every 10 or 15 minutes on this iMac. All other devices are fine (including a Macbook running Mavericks). It doesn't matter whether I connect using wireless or use an ethernet cable, the disconnects just continue. Can anyone help?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

It has nothing to do with the Mac. Check the cable, try another, and check your router. Every router has a logging feature, check the router logs for the cause.

Thanks, but it disconnects even when connected wirelessly. I had the same problem over a year ago before I got fibre optic installed. The wireless would constantly disconnect and the thing that cured it was changing my router security to WPA2. This new router is already WPA2.

I will try and find out how to check the router log as I have never done that before. I'll report back.

Well Apple Mac systems are known for having WiFi problems. You can see many posts a day on that on these forums.

I suspect your Ethernet problem is either a faulty cable, a router glitch or that your Mac really isn't connecting by Either net and the drop outs you are seeing is over the WiFi signal.

No. (I had to Google what a Proxy server was).

The only other thing I haven't mentioned is that I am using a pair of powerline adapters to connect using ethernet. Normally I would suspect those as the culprits but the Wi-Fi disconnects started happening at the exact same time as the wired disconnects so I ruled those out.

I think it is more of a Mac hardware or incompatiblity between the Mac hardware and your router.

Honestly Ethernet should never drop out unless there is a hardware problem with either the computer or the router. Try a different port on the router.

Thanks again. I don't think there is a hardware problem with the iMac as this only started happening on the day the new router was installed. I will try switching ports and cables. Thank you so much for taking the time to help :-)
