iPhone 4s will not appear as device when connected to MacBook Pro when iTunes is open

iPhone 4s will not appear as device when connected to MacBook Pro when iTunes is open.

I updated my iTunes to 11.1.5 (5) and I recently updated my iPhone 4s to 7.1

now when I connect my phone to my computer using the usb cable it vibrates to let me know its charging

but when I open iTunes where it usually says "nameiPhone" top right next to iTunes store button it is just blank
