Accidentally highlighting all and undoing all other highlights in a chapter.

I have the problem of accidentally highlighting all text in a chapter which undoes all previously highlights in the chapter. I don't understand how this happens and can't undo it. Previous highlights in previous chapters stay unchanged. I know I can delete the highlight but then I have to start over. Is there a way to undo the "highlight all" and revert back to the previous highlights?
