My iPhone 5 camera roll is empty, but under usage says 3.1GB - how can I delete?

I can't download the latest iPhone software b/c my Camera Roll is taking up 3.1GB of space, but it shouldn't be as I have only about 10 photos on my camera roll. Photo stream is off, as well as photo sharing. Any help would be appreciated!

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.6

The "date trick" didn't work for me either. I'm using iPhone 6 with IOS 10.3.3 and setting the date back didn't show any additional photos in "Recently Deleted".

I had 622 MB of wasted space, supposedly used for "Photo Library". I have "iCloud Photo Library" disabled and "My Photo Stram" enabled. Since changing the date didn't help, I went into "Settings -> Photos & Camera" and enabled "iCloud Photo Library" just to see if that made any difference. But apparently it made things even worse since it started increasing the "Photo Library" size (as visible in "Settings->General->Storage & iCloud Usage->Manage Storage->Photos & Camera") in front of my very eyes. It increased from 622 MB to 1,31 GB in a span of 1 or 2 minutes. The "Photos" app still shows everything at 0 (Camera Roll, Recently Deleted, Photo Stream).

I then turned "iCloud Photo Library" back OFF and toggled the "My Photo Stream" setting as well, but nothing changed. So now I'm at 1,31 GB of wasted space which I can't recover.

The scary thing is that this issue apparently exists at least since 2014 and Apple still didn't fix it. I'm guessing people don't even know they have it until their phone starts showing the "Low memory" warnings. That's how it was on my iPhone.

Ok, I just installed TouchCopy 16 (trial) on my Windows 7 PC and connected my iPhone 6 to the computer with the USB cable. TouchCopy managed to "see" some files in the "Recently Deleted" folder (which was actually "/DCIM/.MISC/105APPLE/" from the filesystem's perspective). There were 2 JPG photos and 9 MOV videos in there. I tried to delete them but the program prevented it since it was running in trial mode.

I expanded all the other folders under the filesystem to check if there was anything else in there. I couldn't find anything, so I went back to "/DCIM/.MISC/105APPLE/" to see again what was there ... and .... mysteriously .... the pesky photos and videos were gone. I picked up the iPhone (which was still connected) and went into "Settings->General->Storage & iCloud Usage->Manage Storage" and saw that the "Photo Library" was no longer tshowing 1,31 GB of used space. The free space on the phone was also 1,31 GB bigger. So either the delete attempt in TouchCopy worked regardless of the trial warning, or something weird happened.

Anyway, the ghost files are gone, I'm happy with the result, so I'll just leave it at that.

Try resetting your iPhone to see if that clears out the reported usage. If the problem continues, you may want to update your iOS via a wired connection to your computer (if available) as that seems to be more reliable than installing iOS updates over the air (IMO) ... and be sure to do a backup first, either to your computer (preferred) or to iCloud.

Is it specifically Camera Roll? If you go into Settings/ General/ Usage/ Photos & Camera you should see a breakdown of the usage -- Camera Roll, Photo Library, and Photo Stream. Confirm which of those three categories is taking up the space.

Perhaps you have pictures that you (at least at one time) synced through iTunes -- those would show up in the Photo Library category, and can be reduced by changing your sync settings in iTunes.

I tried to do this:

Settings > General > Usage > Photos & Camera > swipe on Camera Roll and tap Delete.

But it does not give me an option to delete - no Edit button, no swiping Delete button. Is that a glitch or am I missing something?

Also, I read about iExplorer and tried a demo - there were quite a few files under a folder labeled DMIV or something...tried to delete but they wanted me to buy the software before I could. Don't know if this is a scam or if there are hidden photo files which is what it seems like.

A backup contains pictures that are in Camera Roll, but that would not impact reported usage on the device. I suppose if the device needs to be restored, re-installing the backup would recover the Camera Roll but may not repair any condition where the usage is mis-represented (that could be a corruption that could find its way into the backup).

If you mean Photo Stream as a "backup", I think the OP said that it was off.
