No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

Hi

I was running the above firmware on my main appletv, and noticed that Dolby Digital (DD) over spdif had stopped working, both in netflix and when streaming from itunes on my computer. I then took my daughters appletv and connected it to my receiver through spdif, and now DD worked, my daughters appletv was running firmware 5.3 (6105). I tried software resetting my main unit a couple of times, but that did not help. Lastly I updated my daughters appletv to firmwar 6.1, and then DD stopped working on that unit too...

Since then I have cuorisly found that DD is now working on my main unit, when I stream movies from itunes, but still not when watching a netflix-movie...

Anyone out there who have had the same problem?

Cheers Perer

might be a trademark thing that is costing them money. Netflix is an interesting company. I dumped them when they decided to seperate their mail/streaming services. Came back recently to watch tv shows that I always wanted to. But their business model seems to not focus much on enthusiasts but just the average joe. Most don't care about DD because their systems do not support it or take advantage of it. Instead they're concerned (and rightfully so) with getting the right bandwith through ISPs to stream.

Many more people will notice 1080p vs 480 and 780 over a slow net connection than they will dolby digital. In fact they even switched to dd+ to help save some bandwith and as a result a lot of legacy recievers can no longer stream the audio at all.

No excuse in my opinion, but not surprising to see it.

I wouldn't place my full trust in anything any company's support call center says, including Apple's. Their job is to get rid of the caller ASAP. In cases where they don't have an answer they make one up to satisfy the calling party. In the thread your link references the Netflix rep starts out by saying "This is the first time I've heard of this." Where have we heard this before? Oh yes, from Apple's call center reps too. Just saying, call centers are designed to process as many support requests as possible on the shortest period of time. Call center reps are evaluated on how much time they spend with each customer, not whether they solve that customer's problem. I know a few former call center people so trust me on this one.

The fact that someone (Apple or Netflix or both) has removed all references to DD 5.1 on the AppleTV Netflix app is significant. It could mean a fix is not coming any time soon. And it provides a cover screen for call center reps. DD 5.1? What DD 5.1? We don't have any DD 5.1. Instead of the smoke screen I wish we could get a straight answer from both companies.
