Q: No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

Hi

I was running the above firmware on my main appletv, and noticed that Dolby Digital (DD) over spdif had stopped working, both in netflix and when streaming from itunes on my computer. I then took my daughters appletv and connected it to my receiver through spdif, and now DD worked, my daughters appletv was running firmware 5.3 (6105). I tried software resetting my main unit a couple of times, but that did not help. Lastly I updated my daughters appletv to firmwar 6.1, and then DD stopped working on that unit too...

Since then I have cuorisly found that DD is now working on my main unit, when I stream movies from itunes, but still not when watching a netflix-movie...

Anyone out there who have had the same problem?

Cheers Perer

I have the same problem! It is very frustrating. 5.1 sound is the reason I used Netflix with Apple TV instead of Hulu Plus, and now it is not working! Please fix soon.

Wow - great tip! I'll try that. Which Samsung though? Fridge? Washing machine? I'll also look into this "ULTRAVIOLET ACCOUT" you speak of. I hope it's better than that UVVU thing I tried, which of course didn't have Dolby Digital sound - the issue we are discussing.

Same problem here. Apple TV 3 and a Receiver Yamaha RX-V673. The DD logo is missing from the app in Apple TV. It is enabled when I send the movie trough AirPlay from the iPad, but it is a trial-and-error process, as The only way to know if a movie is DD is watching it. The problem already has three months and has not been solved. Very frustrating.

I have yet to find a movie that is presented in Hi-Def and not be Dobly Digital. Of course now you'll have to AirPlay it from your iOS device, or from your Mac directly hooked up via HDMI.

Heck, on my iPhone it states a movie is HD. While on my Mac it doesn't say anything like that. But both show it as HD on my system and both put out 5.1. Well actually for the Mac Mini it says it's 7.1, but that's just how the Mac itself presents digital audio. I doubt that use all 7.1 channels. But I do know that it's at least 5.1

I'm using Star Trek Into Darkness as my test movie.

Do we really need to keep rehashing what we all know? Instead of "me too" posts we need to be sending feedback to both Apple and Netflix. Ranting and venting, reaffriming that you can get DD5.1 by using AirPlay does nothing to get the problem fixed. Sending feedbackt o both companies might result in action. Numerous reports say that Apple and Netflix are aware of this. Nothing to do but sit back and wait or chuck the AppleTV and buy a Roku or an Xbox or someother device that works.

Rest assured the second this issue is resolved this thread will light up like a firecracker.

Some weeks back I called Netflix to complain about this. I was told it was a known issue that they were trying to fix. Fair enough I thought. I told them the service was no use to me this way and if it continued to be broken I'd cancel. It did work briefly, perhaps for a day, about two weeks or so after that call. At the time I thought it had been fixed. The next time I used it it was broken again. I contacted them again, and had to explain the whole thing over. The operator had no idea about the issue until she contacted an "engineer". So, I informed her I would cancel. When, or perhaps if they fix it I may rejoin. I urge you all to contact them with your displeasure and cancel your accounts. It would seem it's the only way to get them to take notice.

I called Netflix and told them to cancel my account and issue a refund. The first person I talked to didn't have the authority to take perform those actions, I had to work with the supervisor. I did get a refund ($7.99)! It's a matter of principal: I wasn't getting what I was paying for. More people should request refunds. This should really be a class action.

Even on a known movie that previously worked in 5.1?

In a previous post, I had stated that a movie that was presented in HD was also in 5.1. I have found that to be untrue. For example, Star Trek 2 and 3, maybe 4 and beyond but I haven't gone that far yet. So far, even though it states HD, it's only in 2.0. Even with me AirPlaying it from my iPhone. I also remember it being 2.0 when I watched them a couple of years ago, but there again that's been a while.

Can someone who has the means to view the movies from other than an AppleTV. Can you confirm Star Treks 2 and 3 if they really are presented in 2.0 or 5.1?

Canceling your netflix account is probably the best action to take, although a few drops wont even register on their radar. If you cancel you need to tell them why. Maybe that will escalate it.

I can't understand why it would take so long. All it is, is additional channels of audio. Nothing ground breaking here and it worked before...

Although this may be a Netflix problem, I'm personally pointing the finger at Apple. Obviously Netflix is sending out a 5.1 audio stream. Since the Apple TV is the only device NOT handling the 5.1 stream, then in my eyes that is the problem whether or not it is technically the cause. Apple trumps Netflix, so if Apple cared they would have told Netflix to "fix this issue or be gone". At any moment, Apple could start their own competitor to Netflix.

In the mean time, I've resorted to watching Netflix using my old Sony Blu-Ray player. I hate it. The interface is slooow, clunky, and horribly unrefined. Apple does the Netflix user interface right, but what good is it if it's missing 4 channels of audio?

You're probably right, but we can't "cancel" our appletv's. And netflix will have more influence on apple than we will. netflix is a big selling point for appletv.
