Q: No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

Hi

I was running the above firmware on my main appletv, and noticed that Dolby Digital (DD) over spdif had stopped working, both in netflix and when streaming from itunes on my computer. I then took my daughters appletv and connected it to my receiver through spdif, and now DD worked, my daughters appletv was running firmware 5.3 (6105). I tried software resetting my main unit a couple of times, but that did not help. Lastly I updated my daughters appletv to firmwar 6.1, and then DD stopped working on that unit too...

Since then I have cuorisly found that DD is now working on my main unit, when I stream movies from itunes, but still not when watching a netflix-movie...

Anyone out there who have had the same problem?

Cheers Perer

    Guys,

When testing netflix make sure the movie/show you're streaming is offered in DD too. There is an option to select subtitles/audio and there it will tell you if it's superHD and also what audio source it is. I was shocked to see the avengers was a stereo only title.

If Avergers is in 5.1 when AirPlayed to the Apple TV. But 2.0 directly on Apple TV. Then might I suggest sign on to netflix.com and report the audio problem.

Look for my post from a day or so ago, page or 2 behind. And copy what I typed out and put it in the "reason for problem" on netflix.com.

Belo, where to you see the Option to select subtitles/audio in the Netflix app?  I don't see it or any other settings, other than my Netflix signin.  The ONLY place I see this type of option is in the Apple TV Audio & Video settings.  And this would apply to all output, not just Netflix.

IAC, Netflix DD is now coming through Apple TV 6.1.1 for those Netflix movies that provide it.

I'm in the Houston, TX area, if that makes any difference.

I tested House of Cards (Season 2), it worked, and about 4 movies in the "New Releases" list.  Only 2 of them came through with DD.

NONE of the shows/movies showed DD in the screen where you play the movie.  ALL did display "HD".

When you are playing a video. Click the up button twice, once to do the progress bar and again to show the title bar.

Once the title bar is shown, at the top if the screen, there's a little message that states "press and hold the OK button for more options." From there you are given options to turn on/off and selective subtitles as well as audio.

Just like a DVD or Blue Ray, each movie has it's own set of subtitles and audio. So some you may only have English while others you'll have more.

Thanks KOT, I now see how to get this display.  But I don't see anything related to Dolby Digital or any sound encoding.  The "Audio" option appears to be for choosing the language, not the encoding.

I just tested Avengers via Apple TV directly and Airplay, both present the movie in 2.0.

If I recall correctly from several months ago when I watched it. It was 2.0 back then. Disappointing to watch a movie like that in 2.0 audio.

    Is this a Joke?

Avengers, Miami Vice, Mission Impossible and many more Netflix titles play in DD 5.1 in my Sony & LG Smart TV's but do not play DD 5.1 in ATV 3  :-((

Weirdest thing is that HAWAII 5.0, 90210 & some other titles do play DD 5.1 with my ATV, What is going on here???

The Avengers movie that I am talking about was released in 2012. I am watching it via my Panasonic TV's Netflix app and it's in 2.0 as well.

As for Mami Vice, if you are talking about the 80's tv show. Then I don't know why that would be in 5.1. It was the only thing that came up when I did a search for it, not even the latest Miami Vice came up. Nevertheless, it's in 2.0 for me on the TV and Apple TV.

I just got off of chat with Netflix and they'll have to get the proper license from the studio to be able to present the Avengers in 5.1. So we shall see what happens there.

I am using outside US Netflix catalog(latin america)...

I refer to Miami Vice 2006 starring Colin Farell and Avengers 2010 titles.

It would be good if people reported what region they are in as well as some titles are 2.0 in some regions and 5.1 in others.

I think you will find (Marvel's) Avengers is is a good example - 2.0 in the US on Netflix but  5.1 in some other regions. This is why I check Amazon Prime vs Netflix to see which video and audio options are offered. Sometimes Amazon will have 5.1 audio and original aspect ratio while Netflix has 2.0 and cropped version - other times Netflix has the better audio and picture presentation.

Glad to hear this seems to be working again - at least for some.
