Q: No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

Hi

I was running the above firmware on my main appletv, and noticed that Dolby Digital (DD) over spdif had stopped working, both in netflix and when streaming from itunes on my computer. I then took my daughters appletv and connected it to my receiver through spdif, and now DD worked, my daughters appletv was running firmware 5.3 (6105). I tried software resetting my main unit a couple of times, but that did not help. Lastly I updated my daughters appletv to firmwar 6.1, and then DD stopped working on that unit too...

Since then I have cuorisly found that DD is now working on my main unit, when I stream movies from itunes, but still not when watching a netflix-movie...

Anyone out there who have had the same problem?

Cheers Perer

I would like you to confirm that the info I have stated is 100% accurate for outside US Netflix service/catalog, I am in Latin America region, thanks for your valuable info, maybe is an issue that Netflix is working on.

    Regards!

matiasnavarro, I can NOT speak to what is available OUTSIDE of the US.  I am in TEXAS, so that is all I can report on.

My main point is that we need to give Netflix some more time to get all of the movies/shows updated for DD.  Again, I have been told that, in the US, the DD icon will be displayed on the Netflix Apple TV play page when that movie/show can be output in DD.

As I see it, more and more movies are available in DD on Netflix Apple TV evey day.  So the main issue is resolved, but it may take some time (my guess: 1 month) before everything in Netflix/Apple TV is back in order.

Again, if anyone finds a movie/show on Netflix Apple TV that shows the DD icon but does NOT output DD, please report directly to Netflix.

As reported on avsforums (and I can confirm) there are multiple titles showing the DD Icon which still play in stereo in the US. Examples include 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Example Short 23.976' (the test clip).

Seems we still have a partial fix....

Here in the Netherlands example short has no DD icon and plays in stereo.  Pirates of the Carribean has the DD icon and plays in DD.

All titles that i checked with DD icon play with DD sound and all titles without it play in stereo.

So for me the problem seems to be solved.

BTW can anyone tell me why i still get (some) email notification for this discussion because i have set all email notifications in my profile to "no"

I only have one speaker, and it has a ribbon tweeter. One day I noticed the ribbon tweeter had some  dust or piece of fuzz in it, so I tried to clean it with a paperclip…. ever since then it doesn't sound that great. But as far as the AppleTV/Dolby Digital issue goes, I think  the problem got fixed. Hope this helps. By the way Avengers only comes in on one channel for me.

For those who are experiencing problems still. I encourage you to go to the "Report a problem with streaming video." Select to report a problem with Sound and paste this into the describing section and submit it.

"This movie has the DD logo and yet does not present in 5.1 on Apple TV (3rd gen at least). It does, however, present in 5.1 via my other Netflix device. "

I just did that with Pirates of the Caribbean, though I did not for the Example Short.

You know what I find interesting. When I view Pirates of the Caribbean on my Apple TV. I am only given two choices for audio. English and Spanish.

When viewing it on my smart TV, I am given three choices of audio. English, Spanish and English Super HD (or however it's labeled).

It's been a hit or miss. Depending on where you are from and what titles.

But I do have a question for every one. Have y'all notice slower load times? There are times I see that turning dial for over a minute. It could be when I am loading Netflix from the main menu. Or when I am selecting a title, either a new or a previous one that I left off part way through the movie.

Most of the time is when I select a movie that I previously left off at part way. But it has been happening a lot lately. My internet connection is well above 55Mbps.

I downgraded the firmware to 5.3 to get Dolby Digital back from Netflix. Is it ok to upgrade now?

While the DD works now I'm finding that the audio is now miles out of sync.

You’ll just have to find out for yourself. The AppleTV software version is at 6.2 now. Version 6.2 adds HD Extras to the mix, like additional video, commentary, etc. I can only recommend you update based on my own experience which has been positive. I never downgraded my AppleTV’s firmware in the first place. I considered that a really stupid thing to do. I wasn’t that long before Netflix and Apple fixed the issue and restored Dobly Digital to titles. It has been working again for over a month now.
