While the DD works now I'm finding that the audio is now miles out of sync.
Not seeing that at all on my setup. Not one iota.

I never downgraded my AppleTV’s firmware in the first place. I considered that a really stupid thing to do. I wasn’t that long before Netflix and Apple fixed the issue and restored Dobly Digital to titles. It has been working again for over a month now.
I didn't downgrade because I have ATV3, and couldn't. But downgrading is not stupid. In fact it is smart and is a best practice in the IT world.
If you apply an upgrade that breaks something important, and you can live without the new features, then downgrading makes excellent sense.
Better still is to NOT upgrade immediately after a release. Wait for others to report on their experience with the upgrade.
So, I'm NOT upgrading to ATV 6.2 for at least several weeks.

Jul 15, 2014 10:46 AM in response to peter aagaardby mcgratpc,I am using optical cable from Apple TV to AVR. I changed the audio settings on Apple TV to sound check - on, sound effects - on, and changed the Dolby setting (or surround sound) from Auto to on. It now works fine.

Sep 25, 2014 12:18 AM in response to lb1999by Kingoftypos,What movie are you two seeing this issue on and what country are you from?
It has been noted that some movies will show 5.1 in some countries while in other's is 2.0 only.
Personally, being in the US, I haven't seen DD labeled movies in 2.0 yet.

Jan 14, 2016 1:23 PM in response to mcgratpcby fabiola c.,Had come across this thread after experiencing no dolbly digital when playing netflix movie/tv shows thru atv gen. 3. It was not until after I had read mcgratpc's post, that I was able to come to a proper solution to my problem (which in my case was not a problem as a result of something apple or netflix did or did not do, but was a result of setup error on my part. My solution: Given that a title in netflix is offered and in fact shows in its apple tv listing that it is encoded with dolby processing by having the accompanying dolby symbol along with the title info, I proceeded as follows: 1) I made sure that the apple tv was selected as speaker in the airplay setting; 2) made sure that sound check, sound effects, and dolby digital were set to on and that the audio output was set to auto in the audio/video settings; 3) I connected my apple tv to my old marantz receiver with the hdmi and toslink connections. 4) I then found a movie that showed the dolby symbol in its title info. I turned on my receiver, pressed play on the atv remote and selected the hdmi input; I then selected the toslink input. In both instances the dolby digital symbol appeared on my receiver display and all seven speakers (5.2) were doing their thing ....NICE!!! This is what I learned: No downgrading or upgrading of firmware was necessary; setup error, such as in my case, not having sound check and sound effect on in the a/v setup menu resulted in no dolby output for me even though I always had dolby digital set to on; and even though sound check may not need to be on, when I took this que from mcgratpc' post and did what he did, and it worked, nothing else mattered; and last but not least, the title listed in the netflix package offered on atv must show the dolby symbol in the title info somewhere, and if not, there will not be any dolby signal to be had, period.
It took 29 pages to get here, but thank you so much mcgratpc for your most helpful info.

Jan 14, 2016 3:57 PM in response to fabiola c.by JMichaelTX,What is the source of your Netflix movie: The AppleTV Netflix app, or your Mac?
This statement makes me think it was your Mac:
1) I made sure that the apple tv was selected as speaker in the airplay setting;
We discovered long ago that Dolby Digital would work when the Netflix source was a Mac, but not when it was the Netflix app.
IAC, this issue has long been resolved. I've been enjoying Netflix Dolby Digital for many many months now.

Jan 18, 2016 8:13 PM in response to fabiola c.by ericlawyh,I have been using Apple TV 3 for years and new to Netflix, since it is recently launched in Malaysia market.
Like other rants, I can only hear from Stereo instead of Dolby Digital in the following connections:
- Apple TV -- HDMI --> Samsung TV
- Apple TV -- Optical --> Samsung TV
- Apple TV -- HDMI --> Denon AVR
- Apple TV -- Optical --> Denon AVR
I have ensured the followings are done:
- I made sure that the apple tv was selected as speaker in the airplay setting
- made sure that sound check, sound effects, and dolby digital were set to on and that the audio output was set to auto in the audio/video settings;
- I connected my apple tv to my old marantz receiver with the hdmi and toslink connections. (For my case, it was Denon AVR-520BT)
- I then found a movie that showed the dolby symbol in its title info
Reports have been lodged to both Apple TV and Netflix Support.
