Condition of refurbished

Hi, I'm getting an iPad mini this year for my birthday and just found Apple's 'Certified Refurbished' offering which is a very attractive offer. It says the iPad will have a new outer shell, is this only the back or does it include the screen? I'd be very happy to get my iPad at such a saving but I'd hate for my new iPad to already have scratches on the screen. Anyone had experience of certified refurbished or can confirm what the outer shell is?
