Is anyone having problems with the new Xerox printer driver update from Apple? My 8700S is no longer working with QuarkXPress.

I allowed a System Update that included a Xerox Printer update. I am running a MacPro 10.6.8 with Quark 8.5.1 and a Xerox ColorQube 8700S. EVERY was working perfectly before the "update" but afterwards anything sent to the printer from Quark would stall the printer. I went to the Xerox website and downloaded their Printer Driver and tried again. Now I could print from Quark but I can NOT get to the printer window to change the type of paper, etc. So, the problem still persists.

Should I try going into Time Machine and trying to find the Xerox Print Driver in the Library folder?

Should I upgrade the whole system software? (I wouldn't mind doing that AFTER I get this magazine off to the commerical printer)

Should I upgrade to Quark 9?

Any help here would be apprciated.

Thanks - Rob

Several, Mac OS X (10.6.8), I work with several different model Apples

As a general rule of thumb, I never install updates until I read its info and I am having problems with my current software. I hide the updates until I need them. Usually this happens when I update or upgrade my os. I don't fix what ain't broken is my golden rule.

It is possible that you need to update or upgrade Quark in order for your newer printer driver to work. First I would try the following....

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.

Select your language.

Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.

Select Disk Utility.

Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.

Click Repair Disk.

Restart your computer when done.

Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

If your printer does not work afterwards, update or upgrade Quark. If that does not work, contact the printer manufacturer.

Thanks for the reminder to run Disk Utility. I always do that on other's computers when I am trying to solve and problem and not sure why I didn't start there.

HOWEVER - I also ran another system update check and there was yet ANOTHER Xerox driver update. I installed that update and the problem disappeared!!!!

Thanks for the input. - Rob

OK, well perhaps I spoke too soon. I am now able to access the Printer window and send a file to the Xerox printer, but the printer then pauses the job and will not resume.

Other programs don't seem to be having a problem

This seems to be a Quark/Xerox print driver issue.

So the question is who develops the driver updates, Apple or Xerox? I would assume Xerox creates the drivers and then Apple distrbutes them through their updates.

Do I try contacting Xerox?

OK, so I wanted to post my short-term solution to this issue. I do believe that either Xerox or Apple did not vet the new Xerox print driver through QuarkXpress and that the real solution is to have a new print driver.

However, the short term solution for me was to go into Time Machine, move back a few days, go to Library>Printers>Xerox and then restore that Xerox folder.

Once I did that, I ran Disk Utitlies and Checked Permissions.

I then restarted the computer.

All seems to be working fine between Quark and the Xerox printer now.

Today, I reloaded SNL 10.6 and when the updates presented themselves I disallowed the updates for printers (3.0) and reinstalled an older version of my Xerox software for the 7120 - XeroxPrintDriver.2.94.3. It has worked just fine. Obviously that is some conflict between Apple's update and the latest driver - XeroxPrintDriver.2.112.0-7120.

Since the problem is existent on different Xerox printers then I would say it is Apple's 3.0 update that is the culprit.

I guess we wait for them to fix it again, but with Snow Leopard on the way out, they may not.

In theory, all versions of OS X are eventually "on the way out!" Snow Leopard is just considered to be that way because it is the oldest version of OS X still be updated.

I hope they fix it. I can go no higher than 10.7 on my Mac and if they don't fix it then I will have to say where I am. I was planning to move to 10.7 when I dumped Quicken.

Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) - full version $15:

Just to follow up - I am continuing to have issues printing from Quark to the Xerox printer even AFTER trying to go back to the old print driver. There must be some other file I am not reverting back to that is casing the issues. I have gotten the printer to run a small file, but then the next job will either quit or I will get a

pstoxrps error message. (I don't know what that means.)

I did upgrade the OS to 10.8.5 in hopes that the problem would be solved - but that didn't make a difference.

I believe the problem is the printer update 3.0. As I said, I reinstalled the OS and put in the Xerox driver and did not allow the Apple update 3.0 for the printers and I am once again back in business.

Is anyone having problems with the new Xerox printer driver update from Apple? My 8700S is no longer working with QuarkXPress.
