Laptop stands

i have been reading through the forum and came across this statement

"Laptop stands are a great idea, shame you can't use them with the 17" MacBook Pros. The screen just closes itself shut as the hinge is not tight enough."

can someone please explain? I've ordered my macbook pro, just waiting on it arriving.

was planning to buy an iLap, but this has but a spanner in the works. ive looked at the iCurve, but it looks like a nightmare for typing.

My original MBP could not be ,aid back in bed with at too much of an angle otherwise the display would flop to an almost closed position. When I took it into an Apple store, they told me that all 17" MBP's did this because the screen is so large and top heavy; that it was a design flaw.

That said, I recently sent my 17" MBP into Apple for a replacement MLB. While it was there I had requested that they try to tighten the display hinge so that it wouldn't flop closed on me anymore. During the interim I would call Apple every day and inquire about the progress. Then mentioned that among the parts that were ordered to fix my MBP, one part# indicated a display housing. When I got the MBP back last week, I no longer had the problem of the display shutting. yes if I hold the machine at a complete 90 degree angle it will most certainly close, but casual laying back no longer does it.

In the end, I think all stock units are torqued to a factory set standard and that is why it was reported as "normal." If you complain, they will do something about it.

do you think this "flopping" action of the MBP will hender my efforts to use the iLap? Im going to be using my computer alot for audio, and the longer i can keep the fans off the better.

plus i quite like using a computer on my lap, so it would be a good way to keep both me, and my computer cool......aswell as avoiding bad things happening to my special place (read on the net that the mental heat dont do ur spem count that good, maybe its great a great selling technique hahaha)

iCurve is perfect if you want to use an external keyboard.

I can't speak for iLap, but I love my iCurve, but you're right, you will need an external mouse and keyboard for it to be "useful".

So if you're using it on a desk, I'd suggest this, it takes A LOT of wear off of your keyboard and trackpad.

As for your "hinge question" I have no idea how to address that, sorry

As I mentioned above, you can't adjust the hinge yourself. You have to have Apple do it. Like I said, since they actually replaced the display housing, I don't think the hinges can actually be adjusted. Make sure that if you take it to an Apple store, you insist that it can be fixed. Some of those "geniuses" will tell you that it is normal and nothing can be done.
