When I clicked "download", it asked me to choose between two alternatives for the download. One was highlighted (something about "save to a file", and the other (unhighlighted) was something else (but it said this latter method was "preferred", so I chose the "preferred" one. I'm suspecting that the originally highlighted one would probably have worked in the same way that the other installations that I have done worked. I'm temped to drag the downloaded google earth icon on my desktop to trash, and starting over from stratch, and choosing the originally highlighed option ... that wouldn't require me to have an icon for my harddisk on my desktop (I think I'd prefer to avoid that ... sounds like I could accidentally misuse that somehow (like accidentally dragging it to trash!)). What do you think?

If you choose to save it to a file, it will probably download a Google Earth disk image, which is like a virtual disk. You don't want to install this, you want to install what is inside it. If you double-click this, it will open to reveal the actual Google Earth application.

There is absolutely no need to add a hard drive icon to your desktop to install the Google Earth application. All you have to do is drag it into the Applications folder. You can get to the Applications folder in two ways. You probably have a shortcut to it in the Sidebar on the left of any Finder window, or you can choose Go/Applications. Just drag it in there, that is all you need to do.

I didn't know to do the eject ... I just dragged the google-earth disk-looking icon to trash ... didn't seem to cause any problems, as far as I could tell.

I DID have to work around one peculiarity: starting with the popup that had the two google earth programs to install, when I clicked on "finder" (in order to get the list to come up so that I could drag to the applications folder), it didn't popup the list of folders ... just ignored me, no complaint but no action. So I clicked on the red circle for that google-earth popup window, then clicked finder, and then clicked (or maybe double-clicked (can't remember which) the disk icon (the one for the virtual goggle-earth disk, I guess), and that brought the popup back up, and I could then drag the google-earth app to the applications folder. And then clicked on the related app (something about web app ...) to install it.

I then got rid ot the finder window, and clicked on launchpad, and then dragged the google-earth icon to the "dock" at the bottom of the screen. Then clicked that, and it said it was goinging to install it (I thought it had already done that). Install worked fine, and the application seemed to work fine.

Many thanks for your help!

There are many ways to eject a volume (keyboard shortcut, clicking a button, choosing a menu item, dragging to trash...). You did one of the correct ways, so no problems were caused.
