Pages won't open document

We are getting an increased number of users all with files that refuse to open in Pages 5, particularly Pages 5.1.

I have gone over several of them and been unable to correct the problem, only able to open the Document.iwa sub file in the package to look at the mix of text snippets and I presume .xml.

Apple reportedly has also examined these and been unable to rectify them.

To aid some kind of resolution I ask that users who have had the problem post here, detailing the last things they did with the file and whether there is anything particular to the files that may be leading to the problem.

Particularly relevant would be where and how the files were last saved.

Are they being transferred or backed up to iCloud?

Are you using 3rd party syching or backup solutions like DropBox?

Are they being re-edited on iDevices, iWork for iCloud beta or back and forth from Word .doc?

Were there any preceeding warnings or difficulties of any kind with the document?

Or anything else you can think of.

Thank you,

Peter

Hey killcondo,

Your best bet would be to go to an Apple Store with your Macbook and talk to someone. You can also start by looking at the support page for Yosemite. http://www.apple.com/support/osx/

Thank you for the advice, I might just do that, although they both use Yosemite and the support page doesn't seem to tell me much, sadly.

Only seems to be an issue on the iMac although after wasting ten minutes I managed to do it somehow - can't see it being because it's old as it's a late '13 model. The MBA is new and equipped with flash and i7 so maybe just a quicker device? I dunno.

Really appreciate your reply, very kind of you to advise, thanks again.

Using PAGES and NUMBERS with the iCloud/iCloud Driver

If you generate a „pages“ file or `numbers“ file, than this file can be stored in the folder „iCloud Drive“ of the iCloud. If you want to edit/handle this file later with an other Mac or iPad or iPhone than you can open the file with the „pages“ or „numbers“ app on the other unit. In order to use this feature you have to activate iCloud and „Handoff“ in the „system configuration“ on all used Apple units.

You should have always the latest updates of the software in order to work smoothly with your apps.

Hoping, this helps.

I have at least two Pages files that are showing the "can't be opened" message when I try opening them with Pages 5.2. When I try them with Pages 4.3 it shows a different message: "The required index.xml file is missing". Removing and replacing the file extension doesn't help.

I think both files were created in Pages 4.3, though I'm not certain. I don't use iCloud, but the files were synced through Dropbox.

My iPad was being replaced, and when I tried to connect via cable my options were to erase the iPad/set up as new or restore the iPad from a previous backup. I wanted neither. For the record, the iPad was not so damaged that it needed to be restored. It just had a glitch with WIFI.

So I emailed copies of my pages files to myself via my gmail account, and then tried to open them on my MacBook Pro. I get this message: "The required index.xml file is missing."

One year in with the iPad and it gets my award for biggest POC ever. You would think that these devices are from different companies who hate and try to sabotage each other, not from one company supposedly making things hum so life is easier.

I've had this problem for 20 days now. I was typing up my story in one of my documents offline when suddenly a message popped up saying: Document cannot be saved offline." And I've never had this message appear on my iPad 2. Almost instantly after I pressed ok, the document seemed to glitch before it exited itself and now the preview screen has half of it covered by a black cover thing. Every time i try to open it, both offline and online it says "Document can't be opened." I'm am getting quite frustrated with this as the story I was writing up is a very special piece of writing and I probably wont be able to remember everything that has happened in my piece of writing for me to write it all down again.

None of my other documents come up with this message and they all look normal with the preview screen not half covered by just black. I don't backup my things because I've never seen a reason to and the things I do on my iPad are mostly not important.

1. On iPad it used to be called iPages, but since the latest update it is only Pages.

2. It used to say "open in iPages" but now it says "copy to Pages"

3. Ever since i got my iPad, I would create a document on my desktop, save as a docx Word file, email it to my userid on the iPad, open it there and save it as an IPages document.

4. When it tries to download the file on the IPad, it stops at about two-thirds into the "importing" and stalls. It says it is importing, but it is stuck and the only option s to Cancel.

This is just one of about 10 problems that have cropped up since the latst release of the operating system. Apple has become sloppy.
