Pages won't open document

We are getting an increased number of users all with files that refuse to open in Pages 5, particularly Pages 5.1.

I have gone over several of them and been unable to correct the problem, only able to open the Document.iwa sub file in the package to look at the mix of text snippets and I presume .xml.

Apple reportedly has also examined these and been unable to rectify them.

To aid some kind of resolution I ask that users who have had the problem post here, detailing the last things they did with the file and whether there is anything particular to the files that may be leading to the problem.

Particularly relevant would be where and how the files were last saved.

Are they being transferred or backed up to iCloud?

Are you using 3rd party syching or backup solutions like DropBox?

Are they being re-edited on iDevices, iWork for iCloud beta or back and forth from Word .doc?

Were there any preceeding warnings or difficulties of any kind with the document?

Or anything else you can think of.

Thank you,

Peter

I experience this problem with one (and only one) Pages file. When I double-click the file, Pages starts but the file does not open and eventually the Pages File dialog opens. The same thing happens if I start Pages and opens the file from the File dialog.

At one occasion, the file did open after some time but the wheel kept spinning and I couldn't do anything but force quit. If it helps, I've saved the error report and can send it if needed.

Pages version 5.6.2, OS X El Capital 10.11.6 (neither Pages, nor OS X has been updated recently).

File lasted edited 2 August 2017 to make a correction and print to a PDF file.

File size 89.2 MB (but not larger than other files that open normally).

I use Google Drive but have only edited the file on my MacBook Pro - never on any other device.

Apps on iOS have versions, and Pages keeps changing so depending on the version and where you created it it, it may or may not be the same.

You created it in Pages on your iPhone? Not anywhere else?

Do you have a Mac and are you using iCloud to sync your Pages files?

There is a more appropriate forum if this is purely a Pages for iOS issue.

I have this problem also after a recent update. I use IPad 2.

All files are are on my IPad and not the cloud. I cannot open at least half of them. Nothing happens when I press on the file name. However, some of them don’t open but when I press on file several times the file pops up for me to rename it. I don’t rename but chose done. Then that file can be opened.

This doesn’t work for all of them. Many have names but do not show content or pictures like others but the file size is listed?

Same thing with Numbers, Adobe Acrobat.

This all happened after update. I have an update going to 11.2 but have avoided updating in case this issue is further affected. Please figure out why and how to fix. I only use my IPad so files are not emailed or shared.

My answer is no to all of the question, too. Only thing I did was update and this happened.

Hi Peter: I save files with neighborhood recommended vendor list, contact info for residents, etc in a file in Mailboxes, On My Mac in my email app. I have several from 2017 that will open - starting in 2016 they no longer open. I have not edited them. They are backed up to iCloud. No 3rd party syncing. No reediting. No warnings or difficulties. I have macOS Sierra, version 10.12.6. MacBook Air, mid 2013. Thank you. Sue

Hi:

The document was emailed to me as an attachment. I put the email into a file in Email. I used to be able to open the email, open the attachment and have no trouble opening them up. But last couple of years I can’t get them to open, except as noted that the 2016 and 2017 ones will open.

I use g mail. haven’t tried copying them back to home folder and checking……. Don’t really know how to do that.

Don’t know the version of pages at the time.

I have typed documents in Pages and saved them to Readdle Documents. When I try to move the file from Readdle to open back in Pages for editing, the file doesn’t open, the spinning wait cursor does its job. When I try and cancel, the spinning wait cursor just keeps on spinning, and I have to exit Pages. I have the latest version of Pages. Is there any way to get the old one back? I really don’t like the 3.3.1 version. Format is really wonky. I much prefer the older versions. Then my files seem to be tangled in the iCloud web, which is extremely frustrating!

Looks like it might be making a connection error.

My guess is that is: Data Base Queued (record of where it is being put), Upload Manager (thing that is converting formats for the synched files to iCloud), Error Domain (null) (isn't finding where it is supposed to be storing the file or not finding the synched file).

Which is why I don't have a lot of faith in iCloud as the "Just Happens" off-site backup or file repository. Too complicated.

Complicated = Things go wrong.

Or as our Papuan friends would put it, "She Allbuggerup!"

Thank you to all of you for your comments. Pages is ok (so far) on my laptop; it's iPad that's the problem. I do all the necessary upgrades for the iPad as well as upgrading the various apps (including Pages) as and when. You say, Peter, that Pages is at 6.3.1. On my iPad it's 3.3.1. I've gone into Apple Apps and the only Pages app is this one. I've gone into settings to see if I can upgrade Pages from there but (as far as I can see) there's no way of upgrading from there. So I'm stuck with 3.3.1.

It's not a matter of trying to save a file, I can't even create a new file from templates (or, indeed, open existing Pages files).

It seems to me that iPad has updated to iOS 11.1.2 but left some of its own apps behind. I guess I'll have to keep switching to my laptop if I want to open or create in Pages.

From MacOSHigh Sierra 10.13.1 I could not open a pages file created in 2016. nothing happened. It small preview screen opens up and the document shows in small, but nothing opened, nor did it from the pages app. The document was exported to a pfd and shared. I do not know if it got stored on icloud or not. So I recreated the document and used the same process and am trying to open it and again no response.

By searching for answers I noticed a pop up showing the the reason was that there was a different developer so I would not be able to open the document. I know I created the document as well as today's document.

Thanks for your reply Peter, I suspect that you are right and it is a version clash between desktop and mobile.

I think I am on the most recent version of OS for the Mac Pro 4.1 (2009) - so yes a bit ancient and according to Apple, Sierra or High Sierra will work on Mac Pro (mid 2010 or newer) - there might be some way of getting the later version to work, I have read something of this, but I am reluctant to risk it. This limits which version of Pages I can upgrade to. Strangely, I had no issues until the early autumn, I think.

I agree Apple is deliberately making life difficult and the iCloud software is less efficient than the google and microsoft online versions, in some ways.

Grrr!
