Get MBP to startup from external HD?

I did a clean install of OSX 10.9 on a Seagate external USB HD. It mounts on MBP Finder and Disk Utility. It shows in Sys. Pref. as a Start-up disk option. But when I select it to be the Startup, MBP still always starts via the internal HD.

When I startup and hold Option key ("Startup Manager"?), this new ext. disk is NOT shown as an option, only showing the internal HD and Recovery Disk.

How can I get MBP to boot from the external disk with OSX 10.9 installed?

(I want to run DiskWarrior from the external disk to rebuild the very out-of-order Directory on installed MacHD mid 2012)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 8GB SDRAM; 750GB HD

How did you install Mavericks on this drive? Did you partition and format the drive before installing Mavericks?

It was already formatted. I erased the drive, a single partition, 3TB, Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Downloaded Mavericks Install from App store and installed to drive. "3 TB Seagate Backup + Desk Media"

I'd appreciate it if you would open Disk Utility and check how the drive is partitioned and formatted. It should be partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
