Get MBP to startup from external HD?

I did a clean install of OSX 10.9 on a Seagate external USB HD. It mounts on MBP Finder and Disk Utility. It shows in Sys. Pref. as a Start-up disk option. But when I select it to be the Startup, MBP still always starts via the internal HD.

When I startup and hold Option key ("Startup Manager"?), this new ext. disk is NOT shown as an option, only showing the internal HD and Recovery Disk.

How can I get MBP to boot from the external disk with OSX 10.9 installed?

(I want to run DiskWarrior from the external disk to rebuild the very out-of-order Directory on installed MacHD mid 2012)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), 8GB SDRAM; 750GB HD

It is a single partition and Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Problem has been corrected:

I disconnected every device from the MBP except the new OSX 10.9 clean install disk. Doing that permitted startup from either Sys.Pref or Option key.

Not incidentally, DiskWarrior rebuilt and replaced the Directory! Even Mavericks seems to be behaving better!
