no cheaper solution than the belkin thunderbolt express?
i feel like i cant use the headlights and windshield wipers concurrently without shelling out for a $150+ switch!

You could use a Thunderbolt display. Connect the display to the computer and the disk drive to the port on the back of the display,

thanks. but to say that apple's only solution to a 3 year old problem is to buy thier $1000 display to replace the one i have which works perfectly for it's application is an unacceptable solution would be a great understatement.
and i'm reading that the belkin hub doesnt work reliably with all units.
