you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Can you get past the grey screen now?

Mar 20, 2014 7:31 PM in response to Melophageby jessdun83,I am having the same problem. I bought my macbook pro on Feb 23,2013. It updated today and now it won't get past the Grey screen. I have tried everything possible. Disk utility will not fix it. It keeps saying not enough threads. And it won't let me erase the disk to reinstall it... way to go apple!

you’ve taken your MacBook Pro to an Apple store, and they were unable to sort it out?

Mar 20, 2014 7:42 PM in response to Melophageby jessdun83,No I haven't brought it in. I just discovered it wouldn't do anything a couple hours ago and I tried to go through safe mode and everything possible. No results. My computer warranty just expired Feb 23rd so apple really isn't going to care unless I pay them a billion dollars to look at it.

if you have access to a FireWire 800 cable and a second Mac with a FireWire 800 port, you could try booting your Mac into Target Disk mode, connect it to the second Mac, and erase your Mac’s internal disk from the second Mac.
