Refurbished by Apple means the MBA has been returned for some reason fault, demo, return within the 14-day period. Apple then replaces the battery, case and any faults are repaired. The unit cannot be distinguised from new and carries a warranty.

A big difference between refurbished and new is the refurb is completely tested...the new gets the low level testing done on the production line.

Refurbished is that is wasa used products that was professionally serviced on because the device has some problems in one way or another, while new is just brand new. Personally, I think it depends on who refurbished it. If it was Apple, then go ahead and save your self a couple bucks and purchase the refurbished one. If you don't mind buying used, I bought my Macbook Air for $750 on eBay with 4 GB of ram and 256 GB SSD, which was a great find. It's up to you, but buying used from someone that takes care of their stuff like I do can save you hundereds.
