Mavericks frequent crashes II

Since my last thread got jacked therefore I'm starting a new thread...

I use Macbook Pro 2012 with 8GB RAM and I have been experiencing frequent crashes ever since I upgraded my Mac OS X to Mavericks this January.
I happen to be using Sophos Antivirus because I had a long living virus/worm in my Mac, which Sophos removed.

As a developer, I also have git, NodeJS and many other configurations on my Mac.

After Windows 98, I found Mavericks to be *thee* most crash prone OS ever. The crashes are the usual BBoD (Spinning Beach Ball of Death) and it almost never recovers from there. Only in ~5% of the situations it recovers after 3-4 minutes.

All of the following activities cause the whole Mavericks OS to crash:

Mavericks is so sensitive that frequent app switches causes crashes.

Finder gets crashed frequently, 2-3 times a day.

Time Machine causes crashes while backing up.

R-click on any skype messaged link causes crashes.

Video/Audio call on skype causes crashes.

Evernote gets crashed while using.

Wunderlist app in the menu bar crashes frequently.

Refreshihng/Opening an attachment from Apple Mail causes crashes.

Pausing a movie in VLC causes crashes.

Pausing/view fullscreen/exit fullscreen in Plex Media player causes certain crashes.

Opening Adobe Reader in Safari causes crashes.

Opening internet videos on Safari causes crashes.

Printing from Adobe Reader or other sources causes crashes.

Opening Firefox or Opera browsers causes crashes.

Syncing iPhoto with iPhone causes crashes.

Image preview causes crashes.

Opening image in Preview causes crashes.

EVEN AFTER A HARD REBOOT, ENTER PASSWORD AND THE MAC CRASHES.

The situation is so bad that I sometimes have to reboot 2-3 times for me to get back to a working Mac desktop.

Since, I do my office work on it therefore I sometimes have to reboot Mavericks 5 or more times in a day.

I waited for the update 10.9.2 but the situation of OS crashing stayed the same.

Any solutions?

Start by backing up your computer system as it now stands. I would suggest cloning it to an external drive. Then I suggest you completely repartition and reformat the drive and perform a fresh installation of OS X. Upgrade it to 10.9.2 if needed. Determine if you are still having the problems you have described. If you do then most likely you have a hardware problem such as a defective hard drive, bad memory, etc. If you don't, then you can begin the process of reinstalling your third-party software from its original media. Test each before adding another. This may determine if there are any incompatibiities. Be sure you install only the most recent versions known to be compatible with Mavericks.

When operating take care with how many concurrent applications you load. Memory is a scarce resource. If you try running too many processes for the amount of memory you have, then you will run out of memory which can sometimes lead to crashes and very slow performance. Monitor your memory usage with Activity Monitor:

About OS X Memory Management and Usage

Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used

OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor

Understanding top output in the Terminal

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

Thanks Kappy for your crappy answer.
As I mentioned earlier, I'm a developer and I know all about RAM, top command, paging etc.
I used to run the same amount of applications with ~1.5 GB free PHYSICAL RAM before I upgraded to Mavecrooks...sorry Mavericks.
Since Windows 98, no OS in the last 13 years of human history has been sensitive enough to crash just on paging with Virtual Memory (a 30+ years old technology).

OSX Mavericks - Advanced Technologies

As you can see in the above link, Apple guys played with memory technologies that was beyond their intelligence, taking us back to stone age of computers!!!

I can understand doing a fresh reinstall of OS and applications etc. if I'd be using Windoes 98 but I'm not therefore I won't.
I have gazillions of software development settings in my machine and I paid top dollars to get a safe and stable OS/hardware combo, which it was till I up/downgraded to Mavecrooks. Otherwise a $300 Chromebook doesn't hurt neither do a $400 Windoes laptop with equal specs.

In the meantime, I experienced

1 Safari crash

1 wunderlist crash

1 SystemUIServer crash

2 Mavericks crashes

Both mavericks crashes were caused when I was using PlexMediaServer. A hard reboot fixed the first crash but the weird second one was first in my lifetime. I had to reboot my Mac thrice *3 times* and a waste of ~45 minutes before I could write this post.

This MacOSX version seems to be *thee* most unstable EVER in the human history. I guess Minix and NachOS were more stable. I have seen alpha softwares to be more stable than this.

I've used Console and copied 'All Messages' but I don't see the point of uploading a *4000 messages* log on this thread. Since it's a problem of SBBOD therefore

/Library/Logs/CrashReporter

is also empty.

So which Console report do I paste for Apple support to figure out the bugs/crashes?

Since then I've had a hard disk failure, totally my fault as I kept it turned on using 'Caffeine" app while I had it in my backpack during an exhibition.

I did a fresh Mavericks install on SSD, restored Time Machine backup and had 2 further Mavericks crashes within a week, I guess.

A new OS X every year with only new notifications, 1 new Apple developed "official" little app and small updates to Apple Mail but HUGE kernel instabilities is all Apple is left with now!!!

Any luck with this? I have a MacBook Mid-2010 with similiar issue.

Create you own thread, describe what happens for you and post an EtreCheck report if someone needs one to help troubleshoot.

If you have any of the junk installed above you will need to remove or update it

@sim4Life

Maybe this explains your old woes …

Did you restore all Applications from Time Machine & select the 'all other files'?

I was having constant total system freezes on 10.9.3 (every 10 minutes) until I found (on twitter) that the major cause was the latest Flash Player build.

Mavericks is pretty weak considering that Flash can freeze the whole system up so constantly and so easily. Let's hope Adobe and Apple get their act together soon.

Now I'm looking into whether Little Snitch, my magic mouse or wireless mac keyboard is causing the remaining crashes.

Still have daily crashes but can get a little work done now that Flash Player is gone. Backed up my data and might have to reinstall. If that doesn't help, I'm going back to Mountain Lion to get some work done.

Uninstall Flash Player and I think you'll probably crash less.

Jul 31, 2014 10:39 AM in response to Drew Reece

I waited a bit to see test it properly. However, after upgrading to 10.9.4 and with SSD in my macbook, the reboot of Mac OS X was taking 30+ MINUTES instead of 20+ seconds prior to the 10.9.4 upgrade.
So I uninstalled Sophos antivirus and got my Mac OS X back to normal. Now, reboot is quick and the applications crashes are decreased significantly.
