I can't get the coursera.org website to load on my MacBook Pro

I can't get the coursera.org website to load on my MacBook Pro (13", mid 2010) The page is blank showing the word “loading” beside a question mark link (which cannot be opened). This site loads on my desk top without problem, so I know it’s related to this specific MacBook Pro. I have tried several browers (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) as well (no luck, same blank page).

OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Make sure it's not a proxy issue.


Go to Safari > Preferences > Advanced


Click: Change Settings to the right of: Proxies


That will open the System Preferences > Network pane for you.


Deselect any checked boxes on the left then quit and relaunch Safari to test.




If that didn't help, try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.


From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.


If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.


Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.


If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Ok ... even though it does not work on other browsers, might be a cookie and / or Safari cache issue.



Go to Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab then click Details. Type coursera.org in the search field top right corner of that window. Click Remove or Remove All if more than one cookies appears.


Now empty the Safari cache.


Back to Safari > Preferences select the Advanced tab.


Select: Show Develop menu in menu bar


You should see Develop in the Safari menu bar top of your screen. Click Develop > Empty Caches


Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
