trouble installing 1TB HD in late 2011 MBP 17"

I have just got my hands on the last 2011 model MBP17", but it was fitted with a 500GB solid state drive, which is not really big enough

I have tried to replace it with a 1TB 5400rpm drive from mid 2009 MBP 17", but it doesn't recognise it

Will the later one only take more modern types of drive?....or what?

(the 500GB went into the 2009 MBP with no trouble or data loss)

Your replacing a 500GB SSD with a 1TB 5400rpm HDD? If you get it to work your going to be unhappy with the performance loss. Why don't you mount the HDD in an external enclosure, put your files, documents, pictures, videos and other non app space eaters on it and continue to use the SSD as your main/startup drive?

Thanks macbig - does your "IF" suggest I am not going to?

I am running it OK off an external 1TB WD studio which has my SuperDuper back up on it, which amounts to similar to what you are suggesting? There it looks as if I have reinstate all the passkeys and all my settings

So maybe better to re-instate the 500GB solid state and try migration?

I have swapped the Hard Drives back to their original computers

The 1TB disc that the 2011MBP wouldn't recognise now cannot be selected as the Startup disc (or the no entry sign comes up if it is chosen using Option Start)

The internal HD works fine once the computer is started using the external SuperDuper back-up as the Startup disc. Also, using SuperSuper I have copied the external back-up onto the internal HD, which claims to make the recipient disc bootable, but doesn't. I can't eject the SuperDuper backup partition, or if I just pull the cable, the whole computer freezes.

I suspect I need to re-format the internal HD and not sure whether I should just Erase it, then copy contents back from Backup external HD, or, perhaps use the Disc Utility 'Restore' panel. The latter did not work when it was in the 2011 computer despite accepting the discs in the Source and Destination windows

Or.....?????

Disk Utility>Restore should duplicate the external HDD onto the internal 1 TB HDD. It should also automatically create the recovery partition.

Ciao.

"I did not realize that you had partitions"

I am not sure what you mean, but new situation is as below. The 1TB WD is partitioned, the SuperDuperBackup being for the 2009MBP I have had for a year or so, the MiscCopies was 'just in case', but which now contains a time machine back-up of the 2011 MBP I have just bought.....my eventual aim being to reverse their contents. The 2011 MBP has 10.7.5 on it and as I skipped lion I find it very confusing having got used to M Lion.

As 'Untitled 1' is somewhat empty I am downloading a new copy of M Lion to install on it, assume that is correct?

May I assume that the images you posted are that of the 2011 MBP?

In this image, you want to install Mt. Lion (10.8) on the volume I have circled.

Then you want to copy the volume on the external HDD titled 'Misc Copies' (the yellow icon volume on 1TB WD) (which has Time Machine backup of the 2011 MBP) and restore it on the above volume where you are installing Mt. Lion.

The 'Super Duper' Backup (the yellow icon on 1 TB WD) is to be cloned onto the 2009 MBP.

I note that 'Untitled 1' (the volume I have circled) has 663 GB data on it. Has this been backed up on 'Misc Copies' volume?

Do I have this correct?

Er, no

The images were of the 2009 machine and referring to the 1TB internal disc that had been damaged during the transfer. I did indeed re-install 10.8.5 on it and the re-install process included option to re-instate data from a disc of choice. So I re-instated the data from SuperDuperBackup and am now back to square 1!!!!

My inference is that when I swapped the internal drives, and they tried to activate from their respective recovery partitions, the 500GB worked OK as it was going from 10.7.5 to 10.8.5. However because the 1TB drive was trying to go from 10.8.5 to 10.7.5 (using the computer' emergency memory), the recovery partition was destroyed.

I have ordered another Mountain Lion for the 2011 machine, but you have to wait for a slot on AppStore and can't use one's previous 'purchase' on a 2nd machine. When I have that, I will repeat the procedure, ie Install ML and take the option to transfer data from SuperDuperBackup.

I will then erase the drive in the 2009 machine, re-instate the application bundle that came with the 2011 computer from MiscCopies to sell the machine on. I am not sure why it is common practice to sell machines with these bundles as half the software is likely to need passkeys, but.....

At least I now understand a bit more about why my attempted short cut turned counterproductive and a bit more how the current craze for software protection works. A bit of a change from the days when any 2 mac owners getting together copied everything the other had from a floppy!!!

Just to make certain that I have a clear understanding:

The HDD labled '1 TB ST....' has 10.8.5 on it and is installed in the 2009 MBP. There is 663.7 MB of data on it.

Mt. Lion technical requirements state that 8+ GB of room is required for installation. We have a discrepancy here.

The HDD labled 1 TB WD has two volumes:

Super Duper Backup which has Mt. Lion OSX and is a copt of the 2009 MBP.

Misc Copies is a Time Machine backup of the 2011 MBP which has Lion on it.

If you have purchased an OSX that did not come as an original OSX on a MBP, you are entitled to install it on another MBP. You should not have to purchase it again. You should be able to download it from your App store account.

I will then erase the drive in the 2009 machine, re-instate the application bundle that came with the 2011 computer from MiscCopies to sell the machine on.

This would be incorrect on your part. The proper way to sell a MBP is to have the original OSX installed with no third party applications. The 2009 probably came with Leopard (10.5) which should be installed. Look at these guidelines:

The 663.7MB was after partitioning and before re-installing ML

It may be that you are allowed 2 downloads of ML, but I have used both on the 1TB; it wasn't going to let me have one when requested from the 2011 computer....a lot of fuss for £14/$20 worth of software

It seems that my son is going to have my old computer, so we'll sort what else goes on between us. BTW the 2009 came with SL 10.6 and has the original discs

Thank you for talking me through it, it is always encouring to have experienced support 'at one's shoulder'

That makes sense.

When I got my late 2011 MBP, it came with Lion. I had some issues installing Mt. Lion so in discussions with Apple support, I was told that Lion (the original OSX) could only be used on the 2011 MBP but Mt. Lion could be installed on any of my other Apple computers. There was no mention of any numerical restrictions. I know £14/$20 is not going to bankrupt a person, but I personally still would hash this out with Apple.

BTW the 2009 came with SL 10.6 and has the original discs

Excellent.

Good luck!
