ipod touch 4g update failure = safemode

After an attempt to update my ipod touch 4g It began verifying and then went straight into safemode and prompted me to connect to itunes. After opening itunes i have discovered that my ipod is indeed in safemode and itunes says that it needs to be restored, I click ok and the devices/summary screen disapears. How am i supposed to restore it if the summary screen dissapears when i click ok. I have been unable to navigate to the summary screen, and upon unpluging and pluging it back in i get the same prompt and the same result upon clicking ok. I already tried restarting the apple mobile device service through the local services menu to no avail. Upon looking in the devmgmt.msc menu i find that the apple mobile device usb driver is not listed under the universal serial bus controllers menu. Now since the device is in safemode, i cannot continue to follow the steps listed on the apple support page. What now?

Try:

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

- Try another cable

- Try on another computer

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
