Jobs get hung up in printing queue with new HP ENVY.

I have a new HP ENVY 4500 connected by USB to my MacBook Pro running on Mavericks. After printing a few jobs, the next one gets hung up in the printing queue. I need to go into the queue, delete the job that has just finished, then pause and resume the current job. I have reset the printing system, repaired disk permissions, and updated the printing software. A member of the HP Forum has suggested uninstalling and going through this all again, but I am nervous about doing it. I would appreciate other suggestions. Thanks!

Ugh! This is why the last HP printer I owned... will always be the last HP printer I'll ever own.

HP's are designed (software-wise) for PCs, and even there they work atrociously.

HP is awful about developing and updating "native" drivers for OS X, and I don't see that ever changing. They simply want you to get rid of your Mac and buy an HP PC. Not gonna happen.

I've had Lexmark, HP, Brother and Canon printers over the years. The ONLY make I'll ever use with a Mac again is Canon. Canon works extensively with Apple to keep up with OS changes, and their stuff just plain works. I have a Canon still camera and a Canon video camera, and they were "plug & play" out of the box.

Epson makes some really good printers, but their support for Mavericks has been substandard to say the least.

I just got a Pixma MX922 All-in-one right after I upgraded to Mavericks and it has worked flawlessly from day one.

I know that wouldn't have happened with an HP.

I know that doesn't help with your situation, but if it's possible to return the HP, I'd do it. And I'd never look back.

This is the suggestion I got on the HP forum. Do I dare try it?

If you are willing, I would like to try a new approach. If we, disconnect the USB cable, uninstall all of the HP software, remove the HP update that came through via the Apple Software Update and then restart the computer. I want to see if the printer will print with out hanging without the software. This will help me determine and ultimately resolve the issue.

If you are up to the task, use the instructions below.

Disconnect the Printer USB cable

Scrub/ Uninstall

Open the Applications folder > HP or Hewlett Packard folder > HP Uninstaller

Click continue, click on one of the printers in the list.

* Only do this step if you do not have any other HP Printers. Hold down Control, Option and Command, While holding the three buttons down,

Click uninstall.

Reset Printing System

Click the Apple icon ( ), and then click System Preferences.

In the Hardware section, click Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan dialog box opens.

Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…

Click OK to confirm the reset.

Type the correct Name and Password.

Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected

Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.

Repair Disk Permissions

On the Dock, click Applications, and then click Utilities.

Double-clickDisk Utility.

Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").

Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.

Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.

Restart the printer.

Now we can plug USB cable back in and the driver will automatically install. Try to print now and let me know what happens. I am eager to see this resolved.
