I am trying to import movies into imovie ending in .mpg. I tried the MPEG Streamclip that I read about in other helps but it didn't work unless I went online to buy an upgrade. How do I do it with out buying anything? I need this done ASAP for a project. Please use simple terms, I am not all that computer savy.
I have a OS X 10.8.5 my .mpg movie files are opening in Quicktime.
Try this.
Locate the video file, right cick on it and look at the bottom of the menu. You should see a line that reads "encode video file". Click on that and that might encode the file to something iMovie can handle.
I don't have 10.8 so I cannot be sure that capacity was in 10.8, as it is in 10.9.

I had the same problem. Here is a very easy solution that worked for me.
1- Open the .mpg video with QuickTime Player
2-Go to file/export/ and pick the "Ipad,Iphone,Ipod Touch & AppleTV" option
3-Save your movie with the option "ipod touch &iphone 3GS" picked
4-Confirm by choosing folder of choice to save it in
Now this new version of the movie should be able to be read in imovies.
