Q: I have been using the linked boxes feature extensively in my layouts, and am most surprised that it has been dropped - WHY?

The linked boxes feature in Pages was one of my pet facilities, and a carryover from my days with MS Office's Publisher.  I am most chargrined to find that when I converted my pages newsletter template to the latest version, the link had vanished.  I first thought it was something I'd done, but now i learn that the feature was removed by the developers.  When can i expect the feature to be restored?

iMac (21.5-inch Late 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

You are not talking to Apple here, only volunteers in a user to user community. Apple does not talk to us or share its future product plans with us.

Pages v5 is a new design and rewrite of the previous Pages ’09 v4.3. Apple, for what ever reason, chose to release v5 long before its features, and as is now apparent, bug fixes, surpass v4.3 functionality. We have absolutely no idea what priority, feature, or time table are inherent with Apple's future plans for Pages v5.

Thanks Folks!  I was glad to get that off my chest, and yes, I did know that this is not an Official Apple site.  I await the developers next move with interest, and advise anoyone with an old template from the earlier version not to respond "yes" to a choice of upgrading to the newer version.

    Many thanks.

Coincidentally, if you have MS Publisher, or Visio files you want to open on the Mac, take a closer look at LibreOffice. What it lacks in a true aesthetic Mac user interface, it makes up in a stronger, frequently updated feature set. And it is free.

No linked boxes in Libre Office, but i do agree it is great FREE program.  I haven't been able to open Publisher files in Libre Office, but maybe there is a way?

    LibreOffice 4.2.2.1:

    To Link Text Frames

You can link Writer text frames so that their contents automatically flow from one frame to another.

    1. Click the edge of a frame that you want to link. Selection handles appear on the edges of the frame.

    2. On the Frame Bar, click the Link Frames icon .

    3. Click the frame that you want to link to.

You can only link frames if:

    The target frame is empty.

The target frame is not linked to another frame.

The source and the target frames are in the same section. For example, you cannot link a header frame to a footer frame.

The source frame does not have a next link.

The target or the source frame are not contained in each other.

When you select a linked frame, a line is displayed that connects the linked frames.

You double-click the .pub file and latest LibreOffice does the rest. Not perfect, but then again, it isn't MS Publisher.

This is an official Apple web site in that it is provided by Apple. But it is provided for users to help other users on a volunteer basis.
