Photostream on iPad mini contains only the last 102 photos

All of a sudden, on my iPad mini I can see only the last 102 photos in my photostream, whereas on my other iDevices I can see all 1000 of them. Whenever I take a new picture it does appear in the iPad mini photostream but I can't see the older photos anymore. What happened and how can I get all the photos back?

This is possible if you haven't connected the device to iCloud in some time. iCloud holds the photos only for 30 days. Devices are expected to connect and download them within that time before they are deleted. You can read more about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858

Photos uploaded to My Photo Stream or shared photo streams are not counted against your iCloud Storage. The photos that you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect to iCloud and download them. Find out how to save photos from My Photo Stream or a shared photo stream to your Camera Roll or computer.

It's unusual for sure and I have no explanation for it. Maybe someone else has seen this before and can jump in with an explanation. But since photo stream is real time - meaning photos are transfered to you as they become available, they are not synced in the clasic sense - you will not be able to get those pictures back into photostream. You can still sync them into albums using iTunes though.

But you should still consider a change to your workflow. Photo Stream is intended only as temporary storage. Ideally, you should be managing those photos in some other complimentary way.
