Kernel Panic_Macbook Pro 15 Mid 2010 2.8

Well, I had a problem when running Logic Pro X on my macbook pro 15, 2.8 i7, 8G Ram, 500 HD mid 2010, when I play in logic, in about 10 seconds, the computer gets black screen and the audio is intermittent, like a broken record, for about three seconds. Then panic screen appears, which is in several languages and says "this computer is turned off ... etc ..." in several languages. I have read that these devices have a problem with graphics chips, and the solution is to change the logic board, I put the text here that throws the kernel panic. Someone could decipher?. thank you very much in advance!

There is a new way to fix the problem. Julian Poidevin sent me this:

Hi, I created a software to automatically correct this issue, you can download it on github, it's free : https://github.com/julian-poidevin/MBPMid2010_GPUFix

---

So download the dmg. Run it. Click in "Patch MBP" window. Enter your login session password. The software will patch the kernel. And it's done. Fixed.

I've made the test with some programs running, videos, fotos, etc and NVIDIA card is working fine. :-)

---

But doesn't work with an external monitor plugged. :-(

¡¡¡ Thanks Poidevin!!!

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…

Good luck,

Clinton

I think there is a solution that will allow you to continue using your Nvidia GPU, and therefore use external displays, etc. I have tried disabling GPU switching and using the gfxCardStatus solution, but many OSX applications simply over-ride these. I applied this today after suffering the regular OSX crash and GPU panic on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro ever since upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. Apple introduced Memory Compression in order to make more memory available to the apps currently in use. Switching this off seems to have the effect of speeding up older Macs that have been struggling to run memory-hungry apps since upgrading OSX version and also seems to cure the GPU panic crashes. To disable memory compression open Terminal and run this command:

sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1"

You will be prompted to enter your system password. No further response will be received, all you need to do is reboot and cross your fingers!
